This is actually something we had on our to do list for quite some time so this will save us a lot of development work.

Did somebody use this tool actually on a production database?

Was the overhead of DMVstats a problem?

I only used it on development and test servers so far.  Whether or not the "overhead" is a problem is very hard to say, it all depends on your specific situation.  The only way to know is (stress)testing the configuration.
